World Heritage Sites in South America

The Chankillo Archaeological Site is situated in a coastal desert in the Ancash region of Peru. Constructed in the fourth century BC, it has been interpreted as a fortified temple complex with a solar observatory known as the "Thirteen Towers."

Chavin de Huántar is one of the earliest and best-known pre-Columbian archaeological sites. The city was a ceremonial and pilgrimage center for the Andean religious world. The site takes its name from the culture that developed between 1500 and 300 B.C. in the Peruvian Andes high valley. 

Deep within the heart of the Colombian Amazon lies a natural and cultural treasure of immense significance – the Serranía de Chiribiquete and the Chiribiquete National Natural Park. This vast expanse of pristine rainforests, towering tepuis (table-top mountains), and ancient rock art represents a captivating blend of breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and profound indigenous heritage.

The Churches of Chiloé are found in the Chiloé Archipelago, off the coast of Chile's Los Lagos Region. This unique ensemble of about 70 churches was built within a "Circular Mission" framework introduced by the Jesuits in the 17th century and continued by the Franciscans in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Valparaíso, a vibrant port city on Chile's central coast, is known for its colorful hills, bohemian atmosphere, and rich maritime history. Valparaíso has earned a reputation as one of the country's most distinctive and culturally significant cities. Its historic quarter is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The coffee tradition is a symbol of national culture for which Colombia has gained worldwide recognition. The Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia is a continuing productive landscape consisting of six farming landscapes, which integrate eighteen urban settlements.

Coro is a colonial port city in Venezuela, founded in 1527 by the Spanish and the first capital of the Province of Venezuela. Its Port of La Vela was the first South American town to achieve independence from Spain, and its well-preserved colonial architecture is one of its main attractions.

Nestled in Patagonia, Argentina's remote and rugged landscape, the Cueva de las Manos, or Cave of Hands, is an archaeological and cultural treasure. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a remarkable glimpse into the artistic expressions of ancient inhabitants.

The Curutchet House of La Plata, Argentina, was chosen by UNESCO from the work of Le Corbusier as an outstanding contribution to the Modern Movement: a testimonial to the invention of a new architectural language that made a break with the past.

Easter Island lies at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle in Oceania. It is famous for its monumental moai statues, created by the early Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui National Park is a protected Chilean wildlife area and UNESCO World Heritage Site on Easter Island.
